Patrick Kane said he wasn’t chirping at Thornton

COLUMBUS — Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane says he didn’t make any comments directed at Boston Bruins winger Shawn Thornton when Thornton left the ice bleeding in Tuesday’s 3-0 Boston victory.

But the Bruins must have thought he did.

“I didn’t say anything,” Kane explained Friday morning. “You got the wrong guy on that one.

“I was at the end of the bench and I was going out for the [next] faceoff, and next thing I know three guys are around me. I don’t know if they thought I said it or what, but it’s something that happens in hockey.”

Thornton was cut in the forehead by the skate of Fernando Pisani and said he was “chirped” at from the Hawks’ bench as he left the ice. He turned toward the bench, clearly upset with whatever was said.

Earlier, Thornton had a near knee-to-knee collision with Hawks defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson.

“I just remember three guys swarming, and me wondering ‘What did I do to deserve this?'” said the 5-foot-10 Kane, before joking about taking on Boston’s biggest player. “I was going to take [6-foot-9 Zdeno Chara down with my right hand and I was going to take [Brad] Marchand and [Mark] Recchi with my other hand. Yeah, probably all three at once.”

Kane agreed with other teammates that this was much ado about nothing.

“It happens throughout the game,” he said. “I’m not sure why it’s getting blown out of proportion.”

Thornton is listed as day to day after taking 40 stitches to repair the cut above his right eye.
